Hi everyone, my name is Amanda Goodsell. I am the RCC in Tennessee and the mid-south region. I am so excited to be bringing you monthly blog posts along with my friend Robyn Lee, the RCC in Northern New England and upstate New York.
Robyn and I discovered that one of the most frequently asked questions we hear in the field is, “How do I achieve the perfect strawberry blonde?” We agreed that the best versions of this sought-after hue lie somewhere between levels 7-9 and have the perfect balance of rich blonde with a touch of translucent red. We have many tools in our Paul Mitchell toolbox and we wanted to share some of our favorite formulations using a bit of all of them.
Let’s start with Paul Mitchell the color. The permanent formula will allow you to lift and deposit by choosing the appropriate developer. And because of the low levels of ammonia, all of these formulas can be used on damp, pre-lightened hair with a 5 volume Developer. We love:
1 1/2 oz. 9G + 1/2 oz. 8RO
1 1/2 oz. 7NB + 1/2 oz. 8RO
1oz. 8P + 1oz. 8RO
Using a P will help control the dominant pigment at a level 8, leaving a softer end result.
If you are looking for an opaque finish with an ammonia-free formula, try using shines XG. Two beautiful strawberry blonde formulas are:
1 1/2 oz. 8WB + 1/2 oz. 8C
1 1/2 oz. 7N + 1/2 oz. 7RO
Both of these formulas can be applied with 5 volume shines XG Processing Cream for deposit, level on level or pre-lightened hair. Choose 10 volume shines XG Processing Cream if the natural hair is one level darker than the end result or if more vibrancy or a gray blend is desired.
Robyn and I both love using PM SHINES to give a translucent strawberry tone to a pre-lightened canvas or to add depth and shine to a natural red head. Two of our favorite formulas are:
1 oz. 6RO + 1/2 oz. 6NB + 1/2 Clear Shine
1 oz. 9RO + 1 oz. 9NB
A great way to achieve a dimensional look is to add highlights to any of the above formulations and then tone using Flash Finish Strawberry Blonde and 3 violet Color Shots. Again the violet will control the warmth, leaving a truly beautiful pale shade of strawberry behind.
Achieving the perfect strawberry tone is a balance of adding just the right amount of red that is suitable to you and your guest’s tastes, and Paul Mitchell gives us endless opportunities to do just that. Robyn and I are so excited to share some of the formulas that have made us successful. We’d also love to hear about yours, so leave your favorite formulas in the comments below.
